T.H. Meyer: D.N. Dunlop – A Man of Our Time

D.N. Dunlop – Theosophist, Anthroposophist, founder of the World Power Conference, personal friend of W.B. Yeats – was a true man of our time, combining remarkable practical capacities in industry and commerce with deep spiritual work and involvement. Born in Scotland in 1868, he lost his mother at the age of 5 and was brought up by his grandfather on the Isle of Arran. Surrounded by neolithic stone circles and monoliths on the island, the young Dunlop had a number of profound spiritual experiences which influenced his later life. With the death of his grandfather, he struggled for material survival whilst devotedly studying occult literature. Moving to Dublin, Dunlop mixed in theosophical circles, becoming a friend of W.B. Yeats and the poet-seer AE, and soon discovered Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine. He went on to be active within the Irish Theosophical Society, giving numerous lectures and editing a monthly journal. What is “The Present Age”?

Dear readers and future subscribers,
This is the “free trial” issue of the English-version of the German-language monthly journal Der Europäer, now running into its 19th year. We decided to call this English edition of our magazine “The Present Age – an international monthly journal for the advancement of Spiritual science”.
W.J. Stein (1891–1957), inspired by D.N. Dunlop (1868–1935), had already published a journal with this title in the 1930s (1936–39). By choosing this title we aspire to connect with and continue the great, unfinished impulses of Stein, Dunlop, Ludwig Polzer-Hoditz (1869–1945) and many others. These individuals were pio- neers in realizing the impulses of Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) for the modern world, each in his own way. Stein wrote the first thesis ever written on anthroposophy; Polzer-Hoditz was instrumental in publicly launching the idea of the threefold society; Dunlop laid the groundwork for a true world economy, which is not yet realized.
The Present Age will try to discuss all major events and developments of our time from a spiritual scientific viewpoint. It is edited on a completely independ- ent basis and has no financial or spiritual obligation to any society or trust.
The Present Age will cover, as does Der Europäer, “Symptomatic events in the fields of economy, culture and spiritual life” and is based on the spiritual research published by Steiner. Its aim is to reach readers in English-speaking countries, as well as English-speaking readers in other parts of the world.
We will, without being dogmatic, not be shy in speaking about spiritual science or “Anthroposophy”, trying to show its unique potential in understanding and tackling all major questions of life. The first issue, which will come out in April, will bring an as yet unpublished article about “The Meeting with the Being of An- throposophy” by Charles Kovacs (1907-2001), an outstanding teacher and painter who worked and lived in Edinburgh.
The editors for the journal are Thomas Meyer (Basel, CH, editor-in-chief), Terry Boardman (Stourbridge, UK, also responsible for translations), Andreas Bracher (Cambridge, USA, co-editor) and Orsolya Györffy (Basel, also responsible for coordi- nation and Admin). Graphics and layout are done by Nils Gunzenhäuser (Bruchsal).
This Zero issue is composed of articles and article excerpts that have been published earlier in Der Europäer or are otherwise from would-be collaborators of The Present Age. They convey an impression of the kind of writing that The Present Age will contain.
To apply the words of D.N. Dunlop for one of his own publications to The Present Age: “It will interest you more than you dream… The price of it is only (… ) £ 10, which is not much if you consider the research necessary for compiling such treasure.”

Der Kriegswille und das neue Geisteslicht

Am 15. Februar trat in der Ukraine ein auf Initiative der deutschen Kanzlerin und des französischen Präsidenten ausgehandelter Waffenstillstand ein. Vielleicht ist er, wenn diese Nummer erscheint, bereits gebrochen worden. Wenn nicht, ist ein solcher Bruch nur eine Frage der Zeit. Denn wie sollte in der Ukraine dauerhafter «Frieden werden, solange Washington vorhat, das Kiewer Marionettenregime militärisch auszubilden und ihm (neue) Waffen zu senden»? wie der US-Politologe Craig Roberts fragte.* Wie sollte Friede werden, wenn die Anti-Putin-Kriegsstimmung in den USA u.a. mit gefälschten Fotos von angeblichen russischen Panzeraufmärschen in der Ukraine am Kochen gehalten wird?** Wie sollte dauerhafter Friede werden, wenn auf Seiten der USA ein absoluter Kriegswille vorhanden ist, wie dies in der Vorkriegszeit des Ersten Weltkriegs bei den britischen Eliten und ihrer kontinentaleuropäischen Hauptmarionette Poincaré der Fall war?
Die Sanktionen gegen Russland aufzuheben, wagten die europäischen Staatsmänner nicht. Ihr Respekt vor der westlichen Macht ist – übermächtig. Obwohl das US-Regime im 20. Jahrhundert mehr Staatsstreiche inszeniert, Kriege angezettelt und Militärbasen errichtet hat als irgendein Staat auf der Erde. Was ist das Geheimnis seiner Macht? Sie liegt in deren okkult-geistigen Wurzeln. Zum Beispiel in den Impulsen, die von gewissen Toten herrühren, die mit zeremonieller Magie im Kreis der Lebenden erhalten werden. Rudolf Steiner hat solche Praktiken erläutert (z.B. in GA 174).
«Es wandeln jetzt viele Persönlichkeiten auf der Erde, denen die Seele fehlt», heißt es in der zweitletzten Post-mortem-Mitteilung Moltkes (vom 13. Januar 1924). «Sie werden Träger dämonischer Gewalten. Wer diese erkennen will, braucht die Erkenntnis des Geistes.» Und dann folgt ein leider immer noch weitgehend wahrer Satz: «Und diese wollen die Menschen nicht haben.»
Seit dem Jahre 1899 lebt die Menschheit in einer Epoche neuen Geisteslichtes. Paul Gauguin malte in diesem Jahre auf Tahiti ein Bild der Früchte-Ernte, durch das ein neuer Goldgrund schimmert, wie ihn auch das Mittelalter nicht gekannt hat. Dieses Licht kann jedoch nur den Menschen leuchten, die es in seiner Wahrheit erkennen und es nicht mit dem bengalischen Feuer allerhand «glänzender», aber unfruchtbarer Ideen verwechseln. Als erste Morgenfrucht des neuen Geistestages konnte die Menschheit vom Baume der Erkenntnis Geisteswissenschaft abernten. Doch ließ man deren Früchte meist unbeachtet hängen oder schalt und schilt die Ernte-Arbeiter wüste Träumer und Phantasten.
Erst wenn es mehr und mehr Menschen nach den wahren Früchten dieses neuen Geisteslichts verlangt, werden real-solide Fundamente für einen dauerhaften Frieden errichtet werden können.
